F: 
Nietzsche diceva “ “Se guardi l'abisso l'abisso ti guarda”.
In qualche modo questa idea del guardare nell'abisso che è privo di luce e non sapere di essere guardati, per me è legata allo stesso vuoto che percepiamo dello spazio inteso come buio. In fondo il buio dell'universo è tale e quale al buio dell’abisso. Basta pensare che sulla luna ci sono stati circa 12 uomini mentre nelle profondità marine al di sotto dei 250 metri soltanto una decina, questo ci da un parametro di misura sull’abisso, un luogo che all' interno della nostra terra è molto più sconosciuto dell'oscurità vediamo nel ribaltamento con con l' universo. 
E’ da queste suggestioni che nel 2018 ho creato l'installazione ambientale “immerso, respiro tutto” in occasione dell'evento Mirabilia Urbis curato da Giuliana Benassi. Usai un antico casco da palombaro del 1943, reperto archeologico dell'Arsenale della Marina Regia di Palermo (con il quale avevo lavorato l'anno prima per la mia grande mostra “we lost the sea”). L'idea era unire i concetti di sotto e di meraviglia con la sensazione che abbiamo quando immergiamo la testa sott'acqua e tutto muta, colori, luce, suono, gravità. Invitavo lo spettatore a fare un viaggio al contrario, avvolto in un ambiente blu, dove seguendo un suono scopriva questo “astronauta” in caduta libera.&#38;nbsp; La registrazione diffusa nell’ambiente, era un frammento di un brano prestatomi dal gruppo musicale australiano We lost the sea, dove si sentiva l'ultimo respiro del famoso subacqueo David Shaw mentre si immergeva ad una delle profondità meno raggiunte al mondo,270 m sotto la superficie del mare, per vincere il titolo mondiale. Morì durante quella immersione, perché ritrovò il corpo di un suo collega che era morto nello stesso posto 10 anni prima e tentò di riportarlo su. Quindi un liquido vitale, che può anche togliere e ricordarci che apparteniamo a scale universali.


S: 
Nei luoghi più profondi dell'oceano, che sono poi più profondi di quanto sia alto il monte Everest, abbiamo mandato meno di una quindicina di persone&#38;nbsp; e di questi non tutti scienziati; gli ultimi sono stati registi come Cameron o altre realtà. C'è un approccio rispetto al senso dello sconosciuto che è diverso da quello dello spazio.&#38;nbsp; Quello che colpisce, é che é un luogo totalmente sottostimato, soprattutto dal punto di vista del ruolo che gli oceani abissali hanno su di noi. Un ruolo fondamentale&#38;nbsp; che non &#38;nbsp;viene percepito come tale, in parte perché non lo vediamo, quindi lontano &#38;nbsp;dagli occhi lontano dal cuore; ma anche perché fino agli anni '70 si riteneva che gli oceani profondi &#38;nbsp;fossero dei deserti liquidi. La luce non arriva, le pressioni sono tali che nemmeno i più moderni mezzi riescono a starci, fa freddo. Verso il '78 -'79, alcune spedizione fatte nelle Galapagos per cercare giacimenti petroliferi, rivelarono che invece era un luogo abitato da strane bestie. Da quel momento è cominciata ad emergere una visione diversa degli abissi; cioè delle zone da cui l'acqua fuoriesce super compressa e &#38;nbsp;super calda e dove vivono forme di vita primordiale, adattate a quelle condizioni&#38;nbsp; estreme che assumono forme giganti, il gigantismo è un modo per compensare la pressione dell’acqua. Quindi l’idea che fosse un luogo sterile e senza vita, invece si è capito essere l'origine di tutto quello che sta sopra, e essere estremamente delicato.


F:
mi fai venire in mente questa poesia bellissima dello storico francese Michele: “il mare è una voce che parla ai pianeti lontani, risponde al suo movimento nella lingua greve e solenne, che cosa dice? dice la vita, dice la metamorfosi eterna, dice l' esistenza fluida. Fa vergognare le ambizioni pietrificate della vita terrestre.” Forse questa pietrificazione terrestre, ci rappresenta perché questo liquidò vitale per me è qualcosa che fare con l'anima.


S: 
Pensa che in un fondale abissale la temperatura e &#38;nbsp;la salinità è così stabile, che se per caso sollevi del sedimento possono passare anche anni prima che si ri-depositi e sparisca.&#38;nbsp; Per questo oggi è una terra di conquista, l'ultima frontiera economica dove in assenza di quadri normativi che definiscano le proprietà dei beni comuni, l’uomo va a pescare, va a prelevare i noduli di manganese, va sfruttare e a trovare nuove ricette, nuove medicine senza domandarsi se lo può fare. In campo medico sono più di un migliaio l'anno i ritrovati medici, antitumorali che vengono estratti e sintetizzati, trovando soluzioni chimiche che sono state sviluppate in decine di migliaia d'anni dal mare profondo.
40 anni fa, la logica era abbastanza chiara, ci occupiamo delle zone vicine ai continenti perché ce le dobbiamo spartire, mentre le zone più profonde le lasciamo alla direzione del bene comune. Adesso è diventata una res nullius e non una res comunis, senza un quadro normativo. Quindi, chi è responsabile dei danni del cambiamento climatico? del riscaldamento nelle zone profonde dei mari?Una problematica in un mondo che invece è facilone, che vuole subito risposte senza conseguenze, dove si tende a fare prima di capire.&#38;nbsp; Un approccio distante che capisce le plastiche in superficie che si muovono o commuovono, ma che non si interessa di quello che accade nelle acque profonde, perché fuori dalla nostra concezione di danno, fuori dalla nostra visibilità; non siamo stati disegnati per vedere quello che accade così lontano da noi, come uomini è fuori la nostra percezione etica di danno.


F:
Come la discutibile etica del così detto punto Nemo, sul quale feci delle ricerche tempo fa per un’opera, che è uno dei 4 luoghi più inaccessibili del pianeta, detti appunto i “4 poli dell’inaccessibilità”; si trova nel pacifico a 2688km di lontananza dalle terre emerse, ed è anche il punto scelto dalle agenzie spaziali per il rientro di veicoli destinati alla distruzione, perché a detta loro in quei fondali non ci sono esseri biologicamente attivi o viventi. Ero rimasta colpita dalla loro certezza nel dichiarare questo punto dell’abisso “morto”. Come si può credere che nel morto il concetto di morte sia slegato dalla vita, una nuova vita?


S:
Che il mare sia stato usato come una enorme discarica per anni, questo non è un mistero, addirittura per tutti gli anni 80' tutti gli esplosivi disposti in mare, non utilizzati, non innescati, convenzionali o chimici venivano gettati nel Baltico. Abbiamo più di 50 milioni di pezzi vari nelle acque profonde che vanno dal proiettile al nogiva da 400kg. Alle Hawaii ci sono aree chiamate geograficamente con il nome degli ordigni; poco fuori Honolulu c’è una secca&#38;nbsp;chiamata “ordnance reef”, cioè &#38;nbsp;la scogliera degli esplosivi.&#38;nbsp; L'idea che ci siano zone dove si possono buttare resti di qualcosa come se il mare fosse una discarica era valida fino a una quarantina di anni fa; dichiarare che ci siano zone prive di forme animali questo no.&#38;nbsp; L’abisso è un sistema integrato, connesso in tutti modi; anche l'acqua di Fukushima non è nociva se diluita, ma supponiamo che non lo fosse, un po' alla volta arriva anche da altre parti. Le discariche a terra non fanno eccezione d'altronde, le sostanze vengono sempre rimesse in circolo sia sulla terra che negli oceani. Non esiste un canale dove tu butti una cosa e quella viene portata al centro della terra, fusa e buonanotte ai suonatori!&#38;nbsp; Il danno può essere limitato solo finché gli anelli di congiunzione, i gradi di separazione tra il danno che fai e la conseguenza sono sufficientemente distanti, però primo lo schiaffo arriva.


F:
E’ una questione di riconnetterci a quello che siamo. Una specie naturale. Quando inizia a surfare 10 anni fa, mi accorsi che questo sport a strettissimo contatto con l’elemento oceano, mi riattivava un senso che era spento da tempo. Si riaccendeva una capacità invisibile. Chiamiamolo istinto, ma che funzionava all'unisono con tutti gli altri canonici 5 sensi più l’elemento acqua. Se pensiamo ai surfisti più bravi, come agli indigeni delle isole che immergono la mano appena pochi centimetri sotto la superficie dell'acqua e ascoltano il mare, &#38;nbsp;la temperatura, le correnti…vediamo esistere una micro sensibilità che però genera una conoscenza naturale dimenticata. E’ quella che ci serve recuperare.


S: 
Se potessimo riscoprire il senso dei sensi che abbiamo perso ormai, potremmo capire cosa vuol dire avere un oceano che al tatto a o all'olfatto funziona o non funziona. Basterebbe 1 solo metro sotto al mare per capire che i problemi ci sono.. se lo potessimo vivere con il senso dei sensi. Ma usare i sensi non è in linea con il nostro pensiero sviluppato negli ultimi decenni. Un pensiero iper semplificato, sconnesso, non integrato, specializzato anche nelle mie discipline. Io faccio fatica a far lavorare i miei scienziati in modo multi-interdisciplinare. Siamo disconnessi da quello che accade nel mare. Il 50% dell'ossigeno che si è formato e prodotto dal fitoplancton nel mare ha creato il clima relativamente stabile degli ultimi diecimila anni; ci ha consentito l’ozio e di sviluppare l'allevamento, l'agricoltura e creare la civiltà come la intendiamo noi.&#38;nbsp; Il riscaldamento climatico globale che stiamo affrontando, se si manterrà a&#38;nbsp;solo 1,5° in più in atmosfera, sarà perché l'oceano ne avrà assorbito più del 90% del calore sviluppato dopo la rivoluzione industriale. Questo eccesso non l'ha preso l'atmosfera, non la biosfera, l'ha preso l’oceano. E' un sistema enorme di stabilizzazione del clima, è il nostro miglior alleato contro il riscaldamento globale e noi non lo sappiamo; ci dà un respiro su due e non lo sappiamo; da mangiare proteine a 2,3 miliardi di persone in maniera spontanea. Non dobbiamo salvare la terra, semmai dobbiamo salvare l'uomo che è una specie un po' delicata, abituata a mangiare due uova al giorno, avere acqua potabile, 2000 calorie e se non sta tra i 18° e i 20°si lamenta.&#38;nbsp; Questo è il sistema che noi stiamo sputtanando o abbiamo già sputtanato. Le rogne non arriveranno quando il sistema abissale finirà di funzionare all'ultima goccia, le rogne arrivano molto prima. E toccheranno la vita sociale, l’economia e le tensioni scateneranno migrazioni. Quindi, la fine arriva molto prima della dell'acqua in casa. Quando arriverà, ci saranno cittadini che potranno temporeggiare ma altri che non avranno modo di scappare. C'è già un mondo che non ha nessuna alternativa, se non quella di restare a morire dove sta. 


F:
Quindi l'abisso è un luogo molto contraddittorio, è un luogo ignoto per noi, del quale non abbiamo paura se lo osserviamo dalla terra ferma, ma quando poi siamo in mezzo a lui, ci rendiamo conto invece del suo potere, della sua potenza. Per questo l'idea di Natura silente e calma al nostro servizio è veramente molto vecchia, e dovrebbe essere già sdoganata, anche se non lo è ancora. L'imposizione del “Dobbiamo adattarci”, non corrisponde a quello che vogliamo noi, noi come “ego”. Per questo mi piace molto la sfumatura di questa violenza abissale che ti rimette in luogo dove questo ego, questo io, questa idea di potere viene totalmente distrutta. Un liquido che distrugge questa cosa invisibile come il nostro egoico sé interiore. Forse ci stiamo già estinguendo lentamente per quello che crediamo noi, senza vederlo.


S:
Un nuovo equilibrio non è detto che preveda 8 miliardi di persone. In fondo è successo altre volte che l'atmosfera sia stata per milioni di anni senza ossigeno … poi è arrivato un grande cataclisma e noi siamo il frutto di quella azione distruttrice o generatrice di ossigeno.&#38;nbsp; Bisogna capire qual è la logica con cui affrontiamo l'argomento, possiamo essere fatalisti, e dire andiamo e vedere quello che succede, oppure preservare quello che abbiamo sviluppato. Purtroppo è frutto della nostra cultura e della nostra limitatezza nel capire che siamo ancora molto legati al dualismo cartesiano. Il 90% del peso dell'abisso è composto da forme microscopiche, di virus e batteri che tu non vedi, quindi puoi pensare che eliminando queste specie tutto il resto smetta di funzionare?&#38;nbsp; Se pensiamo che animali e vegetali muoiono quotidianamente nell'oceano eppure quando ti immergi non lo senti puzzare di cadavere, questo perché c'è un sistema di microrganismi che ti smonta queste cose e te le rimette circolo, e questi processi avvengono soprattutto in ambienti abissali. Noi siamo in cima a una piramide dove tutto quello che comincia in abisso ci mantiene vivi come biodiversità. E' difficile andare nello spazio ma è difficile anche andare sott'acqua.. eppure preferiamo lo spazio, non andiamo a capire il sotto a investigarlo, cerchiamo un altro posto. Nell'abisso non ci vogliamo andare, perché ce lo sta dicendo in maniera più forte che ce lo stiamo mangiando tutto! Mi sta buttando a me, homo sapiens, in un abisso mentale, un abisso di contraddizioni che non voglio vedere.


F:
Come artista ho notato nel tempo quanto le persone reagiscano o non reagiscano all'opera stessa e spesso uso le contraddizioni culturali di cui parlavi, in maniera formale per metterti nelle condizioni di esperienziare qualcosa anche se non richiesto. E spesso costruisco ambienti immersivi accattivanti che li costringano a entrare nelle mie installazioni ambientali che poi portano dentro temi scomodi. Ti dico questo perché credo che questa apatia diffusa sia una delle cause per cui le cose sembrano non cambiare anche culturalmente.E’ in corso una anestetizzazione dei sentimenti, una anestetizzazione dei sensi, per cui l'essere umano non reagisce, non cambia abitudini se non costretto. Ha bisogno di vivere ad esempio il primo tornado a Roma per decidere che il cambiamento climatico è &#38;nbsp;reale. Per tutte queste ragioni il concetto dell'abisso è decisivo, perché ha una immersione al contrario dal cielo all'acqua dove però in questa discesa e con il peso fortissimo della pressione, sei obbligato a spogliarti da tutte le strutture predefinite.. e se sei fortunato forse, troverai ancora il modo di contemplare il mondo. Che poi è la forma più antica con cui l'essere umano ha iniziato a conoscerlo. Forse è addirittura la manifestazione di uno dei nostri altri sensi dimenticati... la contemplazione.


S:
Certo, dall'abisso vogliamo sfuggire perché ci mostra più chiaramente il senso del limite e il senso di hybris che abbiamo già commesso, cioè sappiamo già molte cose in più rispetto a 20 anni fa, la narrazione è già cambiata. Contempliamo fuori dalla Terra. Puntiamo a Marte, ammesso che fosse possibile ricostruire una vita lì… qualcuno mi deve spiegare come trasferiamo 8 milioni di persone, e che cosa portiamo se noi volessimo cominciare una vita complessa come la nostra? Dovremo portarci dietro tutto quello che già esiste qui, per avere esattamente quello che abbiamo. La sfida è ambiare tutti i sistemi di riferimento e tutti i punti cardinali, provare a discutere quella debolissima struttura che ancora ci tiene attaccati una a un ruolo di dominanza culturale, economica, sociale di homos sapiens rispetto al resto. Ed è molto difficile che avvenga in maniera coordinata e morbida, potrebbe avvenire in modo drammatico e veloce con dei costi; quando tu dici che sei a favore dell'estinzione ci sono state delle possibilità di recente, con il &#38;nbsp;virus .. e ci sarà un'estinzione in futuro ma moderata, che partirà prima dai più poveri. Quindi c'è da ricostruire un concetto di umanità, che negli abissi c’è; ricostruire un tipo di cooperazione questa struttura abissale nel rispetto delle loro vite e&#38;nbsp; funzioni ma solo e soltanto se tutto quello che sta sopra non gli esercita una violenza. I segni di una crisi culturale ci sono tutti, abbiamo smantellato il pensiero critico, tutto quello che è espressione della curiosità, della contestazione, della soggettività viene identificato come non performante in un sistema sociale come il nostro.


F:
Per raggiungere gli altrove, dobbiamo partire tutti dalla nostra curiosità, ripartire dallo sguardo del bambino che osserva sempre in maniera molto ampia le cose che lo circondano, chiedendosi cose apparentemente semplici come perché il mare è blu?. L’arte come la scienza, deve continuare a inseguire lo svelamento di quel qualcosa che esiste oltre me e te e che credo faccia parte di fasi, istanti, momenti sfuggenti che abbiamo tutti noi con l'abisso.&#38;nbsp; Il problema, come dicevi è che per ora rimaniamo ego riferiti,&#38;nbsp; ancora fermi al superuomo, fermi alla terra ferma e solo quando ci allontaniamo in mare riusciamo a guardarla in modo nuovo. Dobbiamo ricercare lo sguardo altro, come quando prendo la tavola da surf remo a largo, mi giro e guardo la spiaggia da lontano. O quando sei su una nave e hai quel vaghissimo momento per cui vedi la visione d'insieme dentro quei due blu che si toccano; o quando vai in alta montagna e avviene quell’attimo affascinante per cui vedi la curvatura terrestre, un accenno di curvatura terrestre. Ci serve&#38;nbsp; ritrovare la curvatura del cielo che combacia con quella del mare per ridimensionarci. Lo stesso ridimensionamento che ci suggerisce l'abisso quando ti respinge, ti affonda, ti fa capire che non hai questo potere su di lui. Lo fa con un'azione violenta, chiarificatrice; la stessa con cui mi incontro e scontro spesso in mare quando un’onda butta me e la tavola sott’acqua e cerca di affogarmi, mi ridimensiona.&#38;nbsp; Misurarsi con questa forza, genera rispetto per questo elemento rievoca quell’idea di divinità che gli antichi associavano ai fenomeni naturali. E poiché il divino ha sempre a che fare con il potere agito su qualcosa o su qualcuno, anche il concetto di ridimensionamento è inseparabile dal concetto di potere per me. Hai ragione Sandro, siamo talmente disabituati all'abisso, all'oscurità, abituati invece a che tutto vada bene, che sia gestibile, che questo abisso ci è scomodo, ci terrorizza ci mette a disagio. Invece non capiamo che andare nell'abisso è &#38;nbsp;l'unico modo reale per capire se puoi stare anche nella luce.

Nietzsche said " "If you look into the abyss the abyss looks at you."
Somehow this idea of looking into the abyss that is devoid of light and not knowing that you are being looked at, for me is related to the same emptiness that we perceive of space understood as darkness. After all, the darkness of the universe is such and such as the darkness of the abyss. Just think that on the moon there have been about 12 men while in the depths of the sea below 250 meters only about ten, this gives us a yardstick on the abyss, a place that within the 'interior of our earth is much more unknown than the darkness we see in the tipping with with the 'universe.&#38;nbsp;It is from these suggestions that in 2018 I created the environmental installation "immersed, I breathe everything" for the Mirabilia Urbis event curated by Giuliana Benassi. I used an ancient diver's helmet from 1943, an archaeological find from the Arsenal of the Royal Navy in Palermo (which I had worked with the year before for my large exhibition "we lost the sea"). The idea was to combine the concepts of below and wonder with the feeling we have when we submerge our heads underwater and everything changes, colors, light, sound, gravity. I was inviting the viewer to go on a reverse journey, wrapped in a blue environment, where by following a sound he would discover this "astronaut" in free fall. &#38;nbsp;The recording spread in the environment, was a fragment of a song lent to me by the Australian music group We lost the sea, where the last breath of the famous diver was heard

In the deepest places in the ocean, which are then deeper than Mount Everest is high, we have sent less than about 15 people and of these not all of them scientists; the last ones have been filmmakers like Cameron or other realities. There is an approach with respect to the sense of the unknown that is different from that of space. &#38;nbsp;What is striking is that it is a totally underestimated place, especially from the point of view of the role that the abyssal oceans have on us. A fundamental role that is not perceived as such, partly because we don't see it, so far from the eyes far from the heart; but also because until the 1970s the deep oceans were thought to be liquid deserts. The light doesn't reach, the pressures are such that even the most modern means can't stay there, it's cold. Around '78-'79, some expeditions made to the Galapagos to look for oil fields revealed that it was instead a place inhabited by strange beasts. From that moment a different view of the deep began to emerge; that is, areas from which water comes out super compressed and super hot and where primordial life forms live, adapted to those extreme conditions that take on giant forms, gigantism being a way to compensate for the water pressure. So the idea that it was a sterile, lifeless place, instead it turned out to be the origin of everything above, and to be extremely delicate.

you remind me of this beautiful poem by the French historian Michael: "the sea is a voice that speaks to the distant planets, it responds to its movement in the rough and solemn language, what does it say? it says life, it says eternal metamorphosis, it says 'fluid existence. It shames the petrified ambitions of terrestrial life." Maybe this earthly petrification, it represents us because this liquidated life for me is something to do with the soul.S: 
Think that in an abyssal seabed, the temperature and salinity is so stable, that if by chance you lift sediment it can take even years before it re-deposits and disappears. &#38;nbsp;That is why today it is a land of conquest, the last economic frontier where in the absence of regulatory frameworks defining the ownership of the commons, man goes to fish, goes to take manganese nodules, goes to exploit and to find new recipes, new medicines without wondering if he can do it. In the medical field, there are more than a thousand medical, anti-cancer findings a year that are extracted and synthesized, finding chemical solutions that have been developed over tens of thousands of years from the deep sea.Forty years ago, the logic was quite clear, we take care of the areas close to the continents because we have to share them out, while we leave the deeper areas to the direction of the common good. Now it has become a res nullius and not a res comunis, with no regulatory framework. So who is responsible for the damage of climate change? of warming in the deep areas of the seas?An issue in a world that is instead facile, that wants answers immediately without consequences, where we tend to do before we understand. &#38;nbsp;A distant approach that understands surface plastics moving or moving, but is not interested in what is happening in the deep waters, because out of our conception of harm, out of our visibility; we are not designed to see what is happening so far from us, as humans are out of our ethical perception of harm.

Such as the questionable ethics of the so-called Nemo point, on which I researched some time ago for an opera, which is one of the 4 most inaccessible places on the planet, precisely called the "4 poles of inaccessibility"; it is located in the Pacific 2688km away from the landmasses, and it is also the point chosen by space agencies for the re-entry of vehicles destined for destruction, because according to them there are no biologically active or living beings in those depths. I was impressed by their certainty in declaring this point in the abyss "dead." How can anyone believe that in the dead the concept of death is unrelated to life, a new life?


S:
That the sea has been used as a huge dumping ground for years, this is not a mystery, even throughout the 1980s' all the explosives placed in the sea, unused, untriggered, conventional or chemical were dumped in the Baltic. We have more than 50 million various pieces in the deep waters ranging from the bullet to the 400kg nogiva. In Hawaii there are areas geographically named after ordnance; just outside Honolulu there is a shoal called the ordnance reef. &#38;nbsp;The idea that there are areas where you can dump remnants of something as if the sea were a garbage dump was valid until about forty years ago; to declare that there are areas devoid of animal forms this is not. &#38;nbsp;The abyss is an integrated system, connected in all ways; even the water from Fukushima is not harmful when diluted, but suppose it wasn't, bit by bit it comes from elsewhere. Landfills on land are no exception on the other hand, substances are always being put back into circulation both on land and in the oceans. There is no such thing as a channel where you throw something out and it gets taken to the center of the earth, melted down and good night to the ringers! &#38;nbsp;The damage can only be limited as long as the links, the degrees of separation between the damage you do and the consequence are far enough apart, however first the slap comes.F:
It's a matter of reconnecting with who we are. A natural species. When I started surfing 10 years ago, I realized that this sport in very close contact with the ocean element was reactivating a sense that had been off for a long time. An invisible ability was being rekindled. Let's call it instinct, but that worked in unison with all the other canonical 5 senses plus the water element. If we think of the most skilled surfers, like the natives of the islands who dip their hand just a few inches below the surface of the water and listen to the sea, the temperature, the currents...we see there is a micro-sensitivity that nonetheless generates a forgotten natural knowledge. That is what we need to recover.

S: 
If we could rediscover the sense of senses that we have lost now, we could understand what it means to have an ocean that by touch to or smell works or doesn't work. It would only take 1 meter under the sea to understand that the problems are there-if we could experience it with the sense of the senses. But using the senses is not in line with our thinking developed in the last decades. Hyper-simplified, disconnected, unintegrated thinking, specialized even in my disciplines. I struggle to get my scientists to work in a multi-interdisciplinary way. We are disconnected from what is happening in the sea. Fifty percent of the oxygen that was formed and produced by phytoplankton in the sea created the relatively stable climate of the last ten thousand years; it allowed us to be idle and to develop animal husbandry, agriculture and create civilization as we understand it. &#38;nbsp;The global climate warming we are facing, if it is maintained at only 1.5° more in the atmosphere, will be because the ocean will have absorbed more than 90 percent of it from the heat developed since the industrial revolution. This excess was taken not by the atmosphere, not by the biosphere, the ocean took it. It's a huge climate stabilizing system, it's our best ally against global warming and we don't know it; it gives us every second breath and we don't know it; it feeds protein to 2.3 billion people spontaneously. We don't have to save the earth; if anything, we have to save man, who is a somewhat delicate species, used to eating two eggs a day, having drinking water, 2,000 calories, and if he is not between 18° and 20° he complains. &#38;nbsp;This is the system that we are screwing up or have already screwed up. The nagging will not come when the abysmal system runs out of the last straw, the nagging will come much sooner. And they will touch social life, the economy and tensions will trigger migrations. So, the end comes long before the water in the house. When it comes, there will be citizens who can stall but others who will have no way to escape. There is already a world that has no alternative but to stay and die where it is.

F:
So the abyss is a very contradictory place, it is an unknown place for us, of which we are not afraid if we observe it from the land, but when we are then in its midst, we realize instead its power, its potency. This is why the idea of silent and calm Nature at our service is really very old, and should be cleared through customs by now, even if it is not yet. The imposition of "We must adapt," does not correspond to what we want, us as "ego." That's why I really like the nuance of this abysmal violence that puts you back in the place where this ego, this self, this idea of power is totally destroyed. A liquid destroying this invisible thing as our egoic inner self. Maybe we are already slowly dying out because of what we believe we are, without seeing it.

S:
A new equilibrium doesn't necessarily involve 8 billion people. After all, it has happened before that the atmosphere was for millions of years without oxygen ... then a great cataclysm came along and we are the fruit of that destructive or oxygen-generating action. &#38;nbsp;You have to understand what is the logic with which we approach the subject, we can be fatalistic, and say let's go and see what happens, or preserve what we have developed. Unfortunately, it is a result of our culture and our limitation in understanding that we are still very much tied to Cartesian dualism. 90% of the weight of the abyss is made up of microscopic forms, of viruses and bacteria that you don't see, so can you think that by eliminating these species everything else stops working? &#38;nbsp;If you think that animals and plants die daily in the ocean and yet when you dive in you don't smell it like a corpse, that's because there is a system of microorganisms that take these things apart and put them back into your circulation, and these processes happen mostly in abyssal environments. We are at the top of a pyramid where everything that starts in the abyss keeps us alive as a biodiversity. &#38;nbsp;It's hard to go into space but it's also hard to go underwater -- yet we prefer space, we don't go to understand the underneath to investigate it, we look for another place. Into the abyss we don't want to go, because it is telling us in a louder way that we are eating it all! It is throwing me, homo sapiens, into a mental abyss, an abyss of contradictions that I don't want to see.
F:
As an artist, I've noticed over time how much people react or don't react to the work itself, and I often use the cultural contradictions you mentioned in a formal way to put you in a position to experience something even if it's not required. And I often build engaging immersive environments that force them into my environmental installations that then bring in uncomfortable themes. I tell you this because I believe that this widespread apathy is one of the causes why things seem not to change even culturally.There is an anesthetization of feelings, an anesthetization of the senses, going on, so the human being does not react, does not change habits unless forced. He needs to experience for example the first tornado in Rome to decide that climate change is real. For all these reasons, the concept of the abyss is decisive, because it has a reverse immersion from the sky to the water where, however, in this descent and with the very strong weight of pressure, you are forced to strip yourself of all predefined structures ... and if you are lucky perhaps, you will still find a way to contemplate the world. Which then is the earliest form by which human beings began to know it. Perhaps it is even the manifestation of one of our other forgotten senses -- contemplation.

S:
Of course, from the abyss we want to escape because it shows us more clearly the sense of limitation and the sense of hybris that we have already committed, that is, we already know a lot more than we did 20 years ago, the narrative has already changed. We contemplate outside the Earth. Let's aim for Mars, assuming it was possible to rebuild a life there...someone has to explain to me how we move 8 million people, and what do we bring if we wanted to start a life as complex as ours? We will have to take with us everything that already exists here, to have exactly what we have. The challenge is to amble all the reference systems and all the cardinal points, to try to discuss that very weak structure that still keeps us attached one to a role of cultural, economic, social dominance of homos sapiens over the rest. &#38;nbsp;And it is very difficult for it to happen in a coordinated and soft way, it could happen dramatically and quickly with costs; when you say you are in favor of extinction there have been possibilities recently, with the virus ... and there will be an extinction in the future but moderate, starting first from the poorest. So there is to rebuild a concept of humanity, which in the abysses there is; to rebuild a kind of cooperation this abyssal structure respecting their lives and functions but only and only if everything above does not exert violence on them. The signs of a cultural crisis are all there, we have dismantled critical thinking, everything that is an expression of curiosity, of contestation, of subjectivity is identified as non-performing in a social system like ours.

To reach the elsewhere, we all have to start from our curiosity, start again from the gaze of the child who always observes very broadly the things around him, wondering seemingly simple things like why is the sea blue? Art like science, must continue to chase the unraveling of that something that exists beyond you and me and that I think is part of phases, instants, elusive moments that we all have with the abyss. &#38;nbsp;The problem, as you said, is that for now we remain ego referred, still stuck in the superman, stuck in terra firma, and only when we go out to sea are we able to look at it in a new way. We have to seek the other gaze, like when I take the surfboard oar out to sea, turn around and look at the beach from a distance. Or when you're on a ship and you have that vague moment whereby you see the big picture within those two blues touching each other; or when you go into the high mountains and that fascinating moment happens whereby you see the earth's curvature, a hint of the earth's curvature.
We need to rediscover the curvature of the sky that matches that of the sea to resize ourselves. The same resizing that the abyss suggests to us when it repels you, sinks you, makes you realize that you do not have that power over it. It does this with a violent, clarifying action; the same one I often meet and clash with at sea when a wave throws me and the board underwater and tries to drown me, resizes me. &#38;nbsp;To measure oneself against this force, to generate respect for this element evokes that idea of divinity that the ancients associated with natural phenomena. And since the divine always has to do with power acted upon something or someone, the concept of downsizing is also inseparable from the concept of power for me. You are right Sandro, we are so unaccustomed to the abyss, to darkness, accustomed instead to everything being okay, to it being manageable, that this abyss is uncomfortable to us, it terrifies us it makes us uncomfortable. Instead, we don't understand that going into the abyss is the only real way to see if you can stand in the light as well.

L’uso degli equilibri del mondo si incontrano spesso all’interno della sua ricerca, mescolandosi spesso con i sentimenti umani. 
Indagando i limiti e le connessioni tra esistenza, essere umano e natura da anni affronta la tensione che si genera tra questi. Federica Di Carlo indaga il rapporto dell'uomo con la natura, i confini, l'ambiente, il potere, l'ignoto, misurandone le reciproche connessioni e disconnessioni in forma poetica. L'artista si pone con uno sguardo verticale in costante rimando tra la dimensione umana più intima e la sua rilevanza cosmica.


Collabora spesso con gli scienziati e fisici dei vari centri di ricerca nel mondo per la realizzazione delle sue opere. 
Non utilizza un media specifico, ma costruisce mondi nei quali immergersi. Le sue opere sono spesso presentate come sistemi complessi caratterizzati da una vasta gamma di elementi:&#38;nbsp;naturali, cose inanimate, fenomeni fisici e tecnologie. I suoi cicli di lavoro su un tema possono durare anche diversi anni; sono concepiti come mondi interconnessi, dove ogni opera è la continuazione, l'implementazione, l'implosione del lavoro precedente. Sono simbologie permeabili, nelle quali spesso una parte del lavoro è affidata al controllo della natura e non dell'artista, di cui lo spettatore è testimone attraverso i propri sensi per completare il processo dell'opera.

Works between Milan and Rome


Her works have been exhibited in national and international museums and collections. 
The use of the world's balances are often encountered within his research, often mingling with human feelings.&#38;nbsp;By investigating the limits but also the connections between existence, the human being and nature, for years she has faced the tension that is generated between them. Federica Di Carlo investigates the relationship between human beings and nature, boundaries, environment, power, the unknown, measuring their mutual connections and disconnections in poetic form. The artist stands with a vertical gaze in constant cross-reference between a more intimate human dimension and its cosmic relevance.

Often collaborating with scientists and physicists of the various research centers in the world for the creation of her artworks.
She does not use a specific media, but often builds worlds in which to immerse oneself. Her works are often presented as complex systems characterized by a wide range of elements: natural, inanimate things, physical phenomena and technologies. His cycles of work on a theme can last up to several years; they are conceived as interconnected worlds, where each work is a continuation, implementation, implosion of the previous work. “15 jours de Soleil “ (15 giorni di Sole)

La serie “15joursdeSoleil“ fapartedelprogetto “JevoulaisleSoleil”(VolevoilSole)- che l'artista ha sviluppato presso la residenza francese Résidance Saint Angenel 2020,(Grenoble). Tutti i lavori eseguiti in tre mesi ruotano attorno alla collaborazione dell'artista con l'esperimento scientifico internazionale ITER – esperimento che sta cercando di realizzare un Sole sulla Terra – ancora in corso.

15 jours de Soleil - sono 15 disegni color magenta, che rappresentano i brillamenti* futuri del sole, datati 2035 (data reale di inizio accensione della fusione sperimentale del Sole sulla Terra).Eseguiti attraverso l'ausilio di un pigmento extra fine recuperato da vecchie cartucce esaurite di una stampante, questi brillamenti del futuro ancora non presenti nella corona del nostro sole, sono stati realizzati attraverso una gestualità molto veloce e istintiva.

Questi lavori si ispirano ai metodi che nel XIX secolo gli scienziati utilizzavano per studiare il Sole. Costretti a tracciare i mutamenti e le emissioni di energia della corona solare unicamente a mano, gli scienziati conducevano le osservazioni delle macchie solari sia con il telescopio che con la matita. Infatti, l'osservazione astronomica avveniva grazie all'utilizzo del telescopio puntato verso il Sole, le cui macchie venivano disegnate in tempo reale e con celerità nell'istante della loro visione.

*i brillamenti solari sono violente eruzione di materia che esplodono dalla fotosfera della stella (Sole) e che sono visibili solamente attraverso i telescopi astronomici.

“Tienimi in orbita” è una rampa spaziale verso il Sole;&#38;nbsp;è l’ala di un satellite precipitato dall’atmosfera;&#38;nbsp;è il movimento orbitale che tiene in vita ogni cosa;&#38;nbsp;è l’oceano e il cosmo che si scontrano;&#38;nbsp;è l’ipotesi di un collasso o l’origine del tutto;&#38;nbsp;è un paesaggio da contemplare, dove le stelle provengono dagli abissi;&#38;nbsp;è anche il racconto di un’istante d’amore tra le due più potenti entità che generano e distruggono la vita: l’oceano e il cosmo.

Sopra questo livello ci sarà solo spaziolibero è un lavoro realizzato appositamente perla mostra e prende il titolo dalla definizione concui Theodor von Kármán descrisse il limite fisico che segna convenzionalmente il confine tral’atmosfera terrestre e lo spazio esterno.
Al di sopra di questa linea, individuata aun’altezza di 100 km dal livello del mare, lospazio è libero, non appartiene più ai singolistati. 

L’opera si compone di diversi elementi:una pietra argento metallizzato, recuperatadall’artista dal fondale marino e trasformatain meteorite; una Polaroid dell’astronautaSamantha Cristoforetti (un close up del suo volto chiuso nel casco, mentre effettua un esercizio di compensazione del respiro, una tecnica che serve a prepararsi a gestireun’atmosfera diversa dalla nostra. “Per me è importante sottolineare l’eserciziodi respirazione, perchè unito idealmente al pesoe la matericità del meteorite, lavora sul concettodi superamento di ogni limite fisico, intellettualeo di genere attraverso l’adattamento delrespiro” dice l’artista); 
infine lo spazio vuoto tra questi due elementi che nella sala del museo,rappresenta idealmente la linea di Kármán; confine oltre il quale l’atmosfera si libera dalpeso del mondo.
Da quella distanza da cui l’astronauta ciguarda, la Terra è una biglia piccola e lucente,lontana.
